Sol Federation Armed Forces
The Sol Federation Armed Forces are the unified military force of SolFed, nominally under the control of the SolFed government. It consists of both regular troops under the direct control of SolFed, and units from the various member states that are temporarily placed under SolFed's command.
History
For much of the Sol Federation's history it has lacked a true military force with the various member state militaries serving as the sole military power within the Federation. It would not be until 2492 that the Sol Federation Armed Forces came into being with the United Defense Act, a piece of legislation championed by the Unity Clique. The establishment of the SFAF was not without issue, and during its first few decades the SFAF often struggled, resulting in various minor scandals and embarrassments while dealing with minor local conflicts. In response to these early issues the SFAF would reorganize itself in 2518, adopting the structure that it holds to this day.
After this reorganization the SFAF steadily transformed itself into an established institution within SolFed as what was initially viewed as a pet project of the Unity Clique became accepted and even endorsed by most members of the Federation. The political success of the SFAF primarily came from their success against piracy in the Federation, largely wiping it out in the innermost rings of SolFed, allowing many member states to largely disband their pirate hunting task forces and allow the burden to be carried by SolFed. The greatest political victory for the SFAF, however, is much more recent and is also their greatest military victory.
In 2545 the Void Imperium launched a sudden attack on member states across the rimward frontier of SolFed, quickly seizing control of their territory and annexing them. Further advances by the Imperium were only barely held back by the SFAF at an extreme cost in both ships and life. Over the next 7 years, a unified response from SolFed managed to steadily push them back, ultimately liberating the occupied member states and even occupying some of the Imperium's territory. While the peace treaty in 2552 had the Imperium renounce any aspirations to aggressive conquest, they've been steadily rebuilding their military forces. Today the SFAF's primary focus is on a potential future conflict with the Void Imperium, as there are few who believe peace will last and view it as only a matter of time before another conflict arises.
Organization
Today the SFAF follows the military model established by the Sagittarian Triumvirate and popularized following their victory in the Tiziro-Terran War. It consists of three main branches:
Void Corps
The first is the Sol Federation Void Corps, which is responsible for operations in space, on astronomical bodies devoid of a significant atmosphere, and within artificial habitats. They are regarded as the most important branch and receive far more funding than the other two. The Void Corps are further divided into three subbranches:
- The Sol Federation Starfleet, which operates the majority of the Void Corps warships. The primary concern of the SFSF is space superiority with additional roles including operating picket ships that patrol the borders of SolFed space, sending out exploration vessels, and maintaining a vast armada of transport ships.
- The Sol Federation Space Guard, which are the only force to have existed prior to the establishment of the SFAF. The largest focus of the SFSG are search and rescue and anti-piracy operations, with additional roles including disaster relief and investigating space craft accidents. Customs enforcement is typically left up to individual member states to handle, with the SFSG only stepping in should they be asked to by a member state.
- The Sol Federation Espatiers Corp, which both provide shipboard security for the SFSF and SFSG alongside possessing independent espatier divisions. The espatiers sometimes get incorrectly referred to as marines or space marines due to some human nations referring to their spaceborne infantry as marines instead of espatiers.
Atmospheric Corps
The second is the Sol Federation Atmospheric Corps, which is responsible for operations taking place within the atmosphere of an astronomical body. They are divided into two additional subbranches:
- The Sol Federation Army, which makes up the bulk of SolFed's ground forces with more personnel than both the Espatiers and Marines combined. Compared to the armies of other groups, the SFA is somewhat unique as it focuses entirely on mobile units with their own transport ships. This is because the role of planetary defense is covered by militaries of the member states meaning the SFA has no need for planetary defense units.
- The Sol Federation Air Corps, which operate a variety of aircraft alongside specialized gas giant ships. In addition to their various atmospheric craft, they operate airborne divisions which are primarily traditional paratrooper units, alongside a few units attached to their gas giant ships.
Hydro Corps
The final branch is the Sol Federation Hydro Corps, which is responsible for operations on or beneath large bodies of water. Because SFAF planners don't predict any conflict with a primarily aquatic species in the near future, the Hydro Corps is the smallest part of the SFAF by a large margin. They're further divided into three subbranches:
- The Sol Federation Submarine Corps, which is considered to be the most important branch of the Hydro Corps. The submarines they operate are focused on offensive operations, and as a result most types are either transport submarines for carrying marines, or undersea superiority submarines focused on engaging other subs.
- The Sol Federation Navy, which operates the various surface vessels of the Hydro Corps, and their naval aviation. Due to the importance of the Submarine Corps, the SFN's fleet is largely orientated around supporting the submarines with tenders and supply ships, with warships taking on a lesser role.
- The Sol Federation Marine Corps, which is prepared for both undersea combat and traditional amphibious operations. The two wildly different environments the SolFed Marines are expected to fight in has resulted in them having two entirely separate sets of equipment. Marine units typically specialize in either amphibious or undersea operations as a result.
Troops
Those serving in the Sol Federation Armed Forces are divided based on if they are SolFed Regulars, people who have joined the SFAF directly, or are soldiers from the various member states who have been placed under SolFed command.
The SolFed Regular Troops are the most active part of the SFAF, being the first to be sent into any sort of situation, as well as forming the backbone of their anti-piracy patrols and picket forces. Due to the wide range of environments found within SolFed, the regulars are given largely generalist equipment, able to at least work in almost any environment, with any gaps in this approach to procurement and lack of troop specialization intended to be made up for by the often far more specialized units donated by the member states.
The member state troops make up the majority of the SFAF. Their training, equipment, organization and internal command structure are all determined by the member state which is loaning them out to SolFed command. Entire military units are loaned as a package deal, answering to a SolFed General directlyThese Generals are notably willing to listen to subordinates, as the mere threat of a member state wanting to withdraw their unit is enough to have the General at fault quietly retired in disgrace.. The member troops, or Locals, are typically held in reserve by SolFed command, acting as backup for the regular SolFed forces, or being utilized for specialized mission where the generalist equipment of the SolFed regulars may be inadequate when compared to the often far more specialized member state troops.
