For the most part, the story of Humanity is the story of SolFed. Evolved on Earth (third planet in Sol) from simians a debatable amount of time ago, these bipedal oxygen breathers expanded through their solar system under the banners of the International Space Administration, infesting any star they could chart with colony ships and colonial seed vaults until 2212, when they and a few other galactic species formed the Sol Federation.
Armed with Bluespace FTL drives, humanity spread like a disease, laying claims on untouched systems and establishing a plethora of self-centered, independent nations in the Sol Federation.
Many of the human civilizations presently unaffiliated with SolFed were born from the ambition, greed, and shortcomings of this era. Numerous colony ships were launched and forgotten or waylaid, corporations overextended their logistical network with blind faith in Bluespace drives continuous advancements, researchers stumbled upon anomalies intent on keeping them, folk just wanted to be left alone...
With Genemodding remaining a galactic cultural staple, the idea of a "human species" makes as much sense as the ""book" genre of literature." Many lesserIn terms of population count, not "quality." species began as a like-minded human group adopting similar genetic modifications and interbreeding, and though they'd be insulted if you called them "human", they usually still subscribe to the ideals that make "humanity".
Sociologists draw a distinction between "humans" and "humanity," separating the simian-based bipedals from the ideas and unity that follow in their wake. Members of humanity are individualistic, possessing a survival instinct and a fear response, but under duress will suppress that to save friends, family, or what they perceive to be "humanity." SolFed's Bureau of People defines "human" as "willingly ticks the species box on forms as 'human'," and modern medicine focuses on universally-applicableRather than waste ten years learning to discern every single exospecies to have ever been made, and their minute medical differences. organ treatment procedures and identifying analogous organs.
