Golems
Good morning, new golem! Your body was enscribed with light directives which abide by the SolFed Bureau of People's guidelines on Non-Compulsory Directives, which means for you: you're not obligated to follow them, but if you weren't predisposed to follow them, you would have woken up as someone elseAs a result of this process, golem shells with truly horrid directives often take months to awaken, with unsatisfactory results. instead. So congratulations on your new career, employee! Your first task is to behold the standard onboarding package:
What you are
You are a Golem. Made out of rock, you feel a compulsion to eat metals and ores, using your mouth. If you don't, your limbs will stiffen up and you'll start to die. Don't do that. Your body will take on the properties of most ores you eat, making you suitable for various specific tasks. See the supplemental reference chart in your Employee Handbook for further clarification. As an employee, your language centers have been predisposed for Sol CommonAnd when contact was established, the Admiral waved at the screen and said, "Mi parolas la lingvon de la Homines!" - I speak the language of Mankind. A simplified mix of Esperanto and Modern Latin, and the only recognized official language of the Sol Federation. This peculiar constructed language became popular during SolFed's earliest days, and was almost entirely overtaken by other popular tongues - it became widespread through heavy-handed political maneuvering with the help of corporate bureaucrats and other undesirables. Nowadays, it's a near-universal tongue and a must-know for any sentient being that plans to leap forward into space., the lingua franca of the Sol Federation and of your employer.
You may observe organic coworkers suffering from: Suffocation, blood loss, electrocution, partial cremation from interacting with lava, radiological distress, violent incisions, limb loss, and general-purpose incineration. These are all dangers you need not fear and, as part of your duties, may be required to intercept or mitigate. Do observe that, while you are sturdier than your organic coworkers, you still should fear cold temperatures and a lack of atmospheric pressure, as the forces that bind your body together are not absolute.
Historical Significance
Mankind has always sought to build new life, to aid it in any endeavors, well before their eyes were set on the stars. See the concepts of: Golem, Brazen Head, Frankenstein's Monster, Bonzi Buddy, The Gingerbread Man, and the Homunculus.
No surviving proof of any successful Golem or similar from that era has survived. In 2300OOC: Subject to change. (after pod people, before synths? After synths?) paleoengineers successfully completed a ritual derived from cross-referencing the corpus of artificial man fables, involving a lengthy imbuing ritual, quicksilver, mercury, and in the process created a rudimentary slurry containing traces of metallic hydrogen. In large quantities, the slurry provided enough to allow the creation of a single golem shell, which promptly rose to life. Regrettably, the startled paleoengineer's first instinct was to blurt, "Get that thing away from me!" and the Golem, presumably obedient, escaped.
As the majority of the ritual was derived from a corpus calling them "Golems," the name stuck and now encompasses all Stonemen, created or otherwise.
Post-Employment Prospects
After your generous contract for this immediate task ends, in 2 to 4 months, barring the most extreme of failures, you'll be offered the opportunity to renew your contract in a longer term, comparable to your organic coworkers' tenures, with equivalent benefits and regards.
The galaxy at large has other places for you, should you decide to move on to seek rockier pastures. Several mutual aid societies champion Golem rights specifically, and you can be put in contact with the Modern Stonemen of SolFedModeled after the Modern Woodmen of America and WoodmenLife., the Friends of Clay, or the Go Do Whatever Together. Between the three of them, they've successfully lobbied SolFed for the Stonesteaders Act, entitling you to the ownership of a private mine on a participating planet, with the expectation that you export 40% of the produced ore (at profit) for a period of 5 years.
Several moons are considered Golem sanctuaries, with an ore-moderate but inhospitable surface perfect for a Golem society to operate, built on the backs of hundreds of Stonesteaders.
Most space stations are willing and eager to hire at least one Golem, given your durability and resistance to unforeseen circumstances, even when such resilience is not a critical part of the job role. Due to your history as a compelled being, imposing stature, and sluggish pace, most security operations have an unspoken policy of prejudicial standards and fitness requirements that only two Golems have been known to pass.
Your Task
The supermatter is on radioactive fire, here's an extinguisher, here's a water tank, you might want to run.
