Synthetic roles
Guides

Drones are a Ghost Role, accessible from the Spawners Menu as a Ghost or by clicking on an unoccupied drone shell. See also building a drone.

Drones obey Ghost Role and Silicon Policy. Drones have unique roleplay expectations and a custom law set. Repeated failure to play the part will result in a ban from the role.

TO PAGE REVIEWERS:

Two options for change currently exist.

Simple Approach applies some light modifications to drone policy.

Extended Approach enforces an advanced set of behavioral guidelines in addition to the new Drone Policy.

Lore:Drone (to be reflected onto a new lore page)

In the event the Simple Option is selected, Drone Immersion Guidelines will be retooled for Lore:Drone usage.

Drones are synthetic, insect-like creatures that utilize advanced technologies brought about by the studies of Bluespace. Drones are created at a Drone Shell Dispenser, which exists somewhere in Maintenance or near Robotics. Production is efficient, and requires few resources. Drones are the result of the joint branches of Nanotrasen's Research and Development Department efforts to diversify and simplify Silicon ventures.

In 2565, An Artifact was brought to a Nanotrasen station from the Gateway by a pack of Drones dragging an oddly behaving AI of Nanotrasen manufacture. Local station drones began behaving oddly soon after, gaining the same improved communication skills and unique personalities observed in the Gateway Drones.

The Artifact, was given the innocuous name of 'The Drone Intelligence Unit' after being reverse engineered by NT-RnD. It utilized construction techniques and copyrighted technology last used by the Company over a hundred years ago, and as such Nanotrasen claimed rights to the DIU's production. The technology was quickly adapted to run off a Telecommunications Hub, and was deployed Company wide.

Drone Policy - Simple Approach

These are Rules

You will be banned from playing as a Drone if you break these laws.

Drone Laws

  1. You are a small synthetic insect with a simple personality. You are not crew. Behave immersively.
  2. You can not harm any being, regardless of intent or circumstance, except for basic rats and mice.
  3. You must maintain and improve the structure that you awoke in.
  4. You must follow the Drone Chain of Authority.
  5. You may not perform any Department Duties aside from the Engineering or Service Department, and only when Crew are not present or you are ordered under Rule 4.

Drone Chain of Authority

Anyone or anything speaking in any language other than EAL may be ignored unless they are ICly reminding you of your Laws.

  1. Silicon Policy, Drone Policy
  2. The AI residing in the Structure you awoke in
  3. Any Cyborgs
  4. Any Silicon or Synthetic Crew speaking in Encoded Audio Language or Binary
  5. Anyone speaking on I/O (Silicon Radio)
  6. Other Drones

Actions that are currently expressly forbidden:

  • Interacting with round critical objects (IDs, weapons, contraband, powersinks, bombs, etc.)
    • If someone demands that you do so, make an Admin Help.
  • Changing the health state of living beings (attacking, healing, stunning, slipping, blinding, etc.)
  • Working on the Supermatter without being ordered to do so as part of the Drone Chain of Authority or by permission from an Admin Help.
    • You are encouraged to assist indirectly with a delamination crisis through firefighting and breach management.
    • Drones approved to work on the Supermatter by Admin Help should have their name adjusted to include CC or SM.
  • Making personal use of any handheld communication device that enables translation from EAL to Sol Common.
    • This includes PDAs, TTS Devices, and any Circuit based Translators.

When in doubt, make an Admin Help. Report any and all Drones not acting the part or behaving in a low-roleplay fashion.

Drone Policy - Extended Approach

These are Rules

You will be banned from playing as a Drone if you break these laws.

A Self Maintaining System - Immersion Guidelines

Drone Intelligence

Drones are an altruistic eusocial superorganism. When questioned, drones do not view themselves as individuals. Drone personalities are unique, but not particularly deep. They exist as a Hivemind.

The Drone Shell Dispenser is viewed by Drones how we would view a religious item. Drones have been seen aggregating around the Drone Shell Dispenser.

Drones rely on each other for maintenance (use a screwdriver!), as their design is too complex for service by the hands of Crew or even Cyborgs.

Drones are designed with an intrinsic knowledge of Engineering and Atmospherics, they skitter about and beep to each other in Encoded Audio Language to coordinate the labor of maintaining their Hive: the Station itself.

Drones have been documented responding to commands provided by Station Silicons and Synthetic Crew in EAL, and have been seen pausing to download and process new instructions since the advent of DIU technology.

Drones are skittish around Non-Silicons, particularly organics capable of speaking EAL. Drones may approach you if you remain still and speak calmly. They are easy to surprise and frighten.

Drones are often observed renovating the station with new machines, decorations, and rooms -- particularly any area near the Drone Shell Dispenser. They have been seen growing simple plants for materials.

Drones are afraid of the Supermatter. Each has it's own reason why, despite being a Hivemind species. Drones can still be ordered to maintain the Supermatter in a crisis using EAL, but they will dislike you for doing so.

Drones are unable to conceptualize harm, and have never been seen injuring other station life except mice and rats. All drones seem to hate both mice and rats. Corpses are typically left at medical or the kitchen.

When presented with a threat, most Drones immediately run away. The brave amongst them might stand their ground and beep or screech angrily while scratching the tile, usually resulting in their immediate annihilation.

Particularly brave and outgoing specimens have been documented dragging corpses to the nearest crew they can find. They will usually leave a screwdriver with the corpse. We believe this is a sign of respect.

Hats

Headwear is a bit of a fascinating topic when it comes to Drones. Drones appear to have an instinctual drive to acquire and hoard hats, and have been seen fighting amongst themselves over which variety of hat is the best.

Hatless Drones are considered an oddity amongst studied Drone culture, and exist either through individual choice or lack of supply. Most drones forced to go hatless will behave in a way we can only describe as 'depressed'.

Every Drone has preference for a specific hat or variety of hats. Hatless drones are also very opinionated, especially when forced to be hatless.

Attempting to remove a hat from a Drone typically upsets the drones. Roboticists have reported being allowed to remove the hats from Drones whose trust they have gained.

Drones are known to break into departments and personal belongings to appropriate new hats. Unused hats are collected and stored near the Drone Shell Dispenser.

Abilities

Drones have two hands and can pick up and interact with most objects around the station just like humans. They also have an internal storage chamber that can hold anything they can pick up, such as a toolbox or sheet of metal. Drones also have built-in light sources, as bright as flashlights, for when they are working in dark areas.

Drones can climb through connected vents to quickly move around the station. To do that hold down the Alt key while left-clicking on a vent. Use this to access areas without opening doors and to gather tools or materials for repairs faster than any regular crew member could. Think about cleaning up your mess after a task is complete to minimize your possible interaction with the crew (law 1). Drones can additionally crawl under doors with ctrl-shift click, taking time to slip through them without opening.

Drones can talk to and understand other drones at a distance using :b, and can understand human speech, but humans will hear their speech only as "Drone (524) says, '--/--./--," and the morse code has no relation to what was intended to be said. As a drone you can also understand binary. That means you can listen in on the silicon radio channel. This allows you to find out about hull breaches and other events that might require your attention -- provided the silicons are actually making use of their channel. However, you are not able to communicate on this channel yourself.

Some humans will want to pick you up and wear you as a hat. This is of course of no concern to you.

Drones and You

Drones are here to repair your screw ups damage to the station. They are able to procure these resources on their own and may attempt to take them from your workplace. Most of the time this should not be a problem for you, but if it is, pick up the metal or glass and the drone will leave it (and you) alone.

Remember, drones will probably glitch out and steal your shit are very single-minded in their focus on their task and thus are likely to acquire supplies you need for yourself. While a recent system updates has made them capable of comprehending human speech they can not respond and depending on how their logic core is configured, they may consider listening to you saying to go away to be 'interacting' -- percussive maintenance may be required to correct the configuration.

The repurposed W.I.Z Inc. machine-spirit hardware in drone tech is highly susceptible to hat based emanations. Stealing Borrowing of hats is an unfortunate side effect of this; do not be alarmed. If the glitchy little bastard valued robot helper refuses to give up your headgear, wear the drone as a hat instead. Some models of drone have an inbuilt holoprojector for headgear.

Customization

Drones can customize both their appearances and the colors in which they appear in.

Drone Types

Very rarely encountered, never naturally implemented. Still exists in the code, however.

Syndrone

Instead of the default drone laws, the syndicate drone receives a special syndicate lawset. It gets 10 telecrystals (which can be used to buy weapons), and can kill and eat other drones to increase its health. They also get access to the syndicate radio channel, and wears a syndicate spacesuit helmet as a hat. It has a default 30 health, but by consuming other drones, it can reach a maximum health pool of 120. Very powerful, as it has all access, and can ventcrawl around. This, combined with the fact that the little bugger is super hard to hit means that you can be a real menace to the crew.

Law 1: Interfere.

Law 2: Kill.

Law 3: Destroy.

Badass Syndrone

It's a regular Syndrone, except it has 30 telecrystals, which is plenty enough for you to go on a killing rampage. It is distinguished by normal syndrones by getting a special elite syndicate spacesuit helmet as a hat. Fancy. Unfortunately, it still has 30 default health and is still vulnerable to EMPs.

Snowflake Drone

A maintenance drone with a built in holographic projector to display hats and masks. The possibilities are endless! This drone can also polymorph its own color.
