Ordoht

Denonyms: Ordoht, Ordohts
Other Names: "Skrell"
Related Lore: Lore:Nova, Lore:Space
Languages: SkrelluqPopularly known as "Skrellian" by foreigners, this newly-discovered language that the Ordoht employ follows no traditional speech patterns. It relies on various differently-pitched warbles and low-frequency sound to construct different sentences, and is nearly inaudible to non-Ordoht and anyone lacking an appropriate implant., SlimeA melodic and complex language spoken by slimes. Some of the notes are inaudible to humans.

When the dust settles, will you have a dustpan wide enough to hold the remnants of your species' future?

Ordoht

The Ordoht, a collection of several closely-related amphibian bipedals, were historically a species of great intellect and power. Even without the advantages of FTL travel, they spread across their entire solar system from their original bogworld "Ordo." Most of their technology relies on some sort of engineered or exploited organic material. In a sense, all of their tech is alive.

History

Once their first Golden Age concluded with the complete colonization of the last world in their home system, their ambitions turned extrastellar. Without FTL, and without cryostasis, sending a set of colonists unprepared to a distant star would not be just a suicide mission, but one dooming countless generations for a futile landing. Instead, the Ordoht developed Von Neumann probesSelf-replicating spacecraft, capable of harvesting asteroids or planets and creating more of itself, hitting exponential growth until a specific threshhold is achieved, at which point they begin with a secondary objective. to colonize and terraform worlds ahead of generation ships carrying entire bloodlines. A good number were launched, but one of the unfinished probes was turned against Ordo itself, absorbing genetic material from all life in reach to convert into another copy of itself, or an agent thereof.

Somnolant Exodus

Facing extinction, the Ordoht who managed to escape offworld united in a cosmic retreat. Allegedly, after months of resource pooling and scientific debate about the scope of the malfunctioning probe's goals, these remnants escaped reality altogether through unattuned bluespace portals. Unlike modern Bluespace technology, these portals did not transfer them between two realspace locations, instead severing them from the concept of "location" altogether. Modern Ordoht, having translated these folks' harried research notes, postulate that these "Somnolant" remain alive, dispersed into a metaphysical liquid without a physical constraint to hold them.

The survivors reverently refer to these Somnolant in the present tense, with the expectation that one day, enough of reality will come undone that the Somnolant can craft a return passage and cast all life into infinity. Some Ordoht blame local phenomena upon the Somnolant's influence, and others postulate that some manner of physical matter can be retrieved from these conceptual survivors.

Remnants

Ordoht already aboard colony ships fled blindly into the cosmos, some following a properly functioning Von Neumann probe as intended, others casting their dice into assorted planets. While a good number of Ordoht lineages would survive, and even thrive on terraformed swampy worlds, their populations would never reach the same heights as in the Ordo system. Ordoht scientists are quick to assign blame for fertility issues to whatever issue is hot in academia that week. Popular theories include:

  • Lack of ambient Resonance.
  • Weakened noospheric connections from lack of galactic visiblity.
  • Somnulant guidance.
  • Metaphysical connection weakened by distance to the Ordo system.
  • Interbreeding with other bipedals.
  • Lack of interbreeding with other bipedals.
  • TelomereTelomeres are structures made from DNA sequences and proteins found at the ends of chromosomes. They cap and protect the end of a chromosome like the end of a shoelace. They wear down over time and are usually correlated with aging. maladaption.

Modern

In modern times, Ordoht remain as a minor player on the galactic scene, appearing in almost any academic institution whose locks are flimsier than an 8th level Proton Alignment Harness. Due to their capabilities with biotechnology, Ordoht seed labs produce the majority of plant and mushroom cultivars found on station. Most simple crops, even Corn, have been modified by Ordoht bioengineers in some way, simplifying their genetic structure to make them grow faster, survive harsher environments, react to simpler fertilizers, or so on. Rumor has it, the "gatfruit" is an Ordoht Original, grown to bypass trademarks on .357 held by Smith & Wesson.
