Crew members as experienced and efficient they may be, ''need'' someone to hold the line in case the local [[Changeling]] has whipped most of their fellow co-workers. Nothing hits morale more than having your leader taken down the first ten minutes of combat. Furthermore, you are one of the links in the [[Chain of Command|chain of command]], if you go down, your department will be a huge uncoordinated blind spot for all the others ''attempting'' to keep the ship afloat.

All of this to say, a '''head of command''' should be the ''last'' member of a department to get directly involved in a dangerous altercation. Unless the situation calls for your direct presence on the field, your true strength is how well you coordinate with others while holding the fort, not by dying for it in glory.
